Buffalo – 1972

This year was probably the premier year for the National Wrestling Federation, and maybe even for Buffalo wrestling, period. With a roster full of stars and Hall of Famers, fans were able to get a glimpse of Bruno Sammartino, Luke Graham, Abdullah the Butcher, Ernie Ladd, The Sheik, Johnny Valentine, and many others. Waldo von Erich was the focus of much of the promotion, and his feud with the now-fan favorite Ladd drew strong crowds throughout the spring. The year also saw the first Buffalo appearance of 17-year-old sensation Raymond Rougeau, which came after the NWF picked up the Montreal territory.

As always, Buffalo was a hotshot territory. A couple of the most notable events:

A midget gets bloodied. Midgets wrestling was always a staple in Buffalo. A rare mixed-midget match came on Sept. 23 when the full-sized Fargo Brothers faced Dominic DeNucci and the pint-sized Sonny Boy Hayes. In the third fall, the Fargos began picking up Hayes and dropping him to the mat. DeNucci punched the referee as his team was disqualified, and Hayes then stumbled around the ring until he hit his head on the ringpost and came away with a giant gash. DeNucci carried Hayes to the dressing room and one NWF correspondent on the scene reported part of Hayes' nose was hanging on to his face by the skin.

The strange case of the bongos. Well, this you could see coming. On Nov. 22, Abdullah was smashing Bearcat Wright around the ring in their match until an unknown man dressed in African garb came to ringside to play a set of bongo drums. The bongos inspired the veteran Wright, who proceeded to deliver about six headbutts to his foe. Not surprisingly, Abdullah started to bleed. More headbutts, more blood, until Abdullah was an absolute mess. At that point, Johnny Valentine ran into the ring, only to be greeted with even more headbutts from Wright. Ernie Ladd finally came to the ring to restore order and found Wright exhausted, a bloody Valentine slumped in a corner, a bloody Abdullah motionless and face down on the mat, and the bongo player hitting the drums harder than ever. Attendants carried Abdullah away on a stretcher, and, not surprisingly, Valentine was easy pickings for Ladd in the main event.
