August 24, 1961 – ‘Constant Bally-ho’

ImageAt the height of the Martinez promotion, Yetter gives us some good information; that Ed Don George was drawing flies before Martinez bought him out in 1955, and that the secret to success is the old "bally-ho," the constant drumbeat of publicity. Certainly, Yetter was corresponding with a master in that regard, although by this time it is apparent that Pfefer has jettisoned his short-lived involvement in a Denver opposition to head to California. That state had just seen the upheaval of the San Francisco promotion, when Roy Shire effectively took over from Joe Malcewicz. Also note that Dick the Bruiser is once again headed for Buffalo. We've written this in several places before, including the tag team book. But, once and for all, Bruiser was not suspended for life by the state athletic commission for the 1957 riot in Madison Square Garden. He might have claimed he was — but that was just the old "bally-ho" at work.
