Pittsburgh – 1973

1973 was most notable for a return to "past practices." After the NWF tried to make it mark in Pittsburgh in late 1972, with unsuccessful results, the territory reverted to the familiar pattern of keeping Bruno Sammartino in the main event, with the usual solid group of undercard workers. In early 1973, Sammartino and Prof. Tour Tanaka reprised their WWWF struggles of previous years  with a three-match series that ended in a Texas Death Match (and victory for Sammartino). Bruno was in every main event during the year, save one — in late November, just before he regained the WWWF world title.

One treat for fans was the informal alliance between Sammartino and Dick the Bruiser's Indianapolis-based WWA. Sammartino worked some dates for Bruiser, and, in exchange, brought in some fresh faces to Pittsburgh. Larry Hennig, Baron von Raschke, Bobby Heenan (as a manager), Bruiser, and Crusher Ricky Cortez (once spotted alertly by Ken Jugan entering an arena with two cans of orange juice) all worked in Pittsburgh in the fall of 1973.

A visit by The Sheik late in the year kept things hopping. The wild Syrian mauled and bloodied Terry Yorkston on a TV taping, then topped off things by "eating" fire off a stick.
